GLOW: Light, Art and Architecture combined

GLOW is the International Forum of Light in Art and Architecture. In this event artists use artificial light to change or enhance parts of our already beautiful city. GLOW 2011 takes place from November 5th - 12th and this years theme is 'illusion and reality'. Viewers are asked to examine the differences between how we see our city and how it can be changed with the addition of light. A special highlight this year is the anniversary of two Eindhoven institutions. The Eindhoven University of Technology is celebrating its 55th year and the Van Abbe Museum is celebrating its 75th year. The importance of these two institutions will be highlighted by a laser connecting both buildings.

Urban concrete and natural beauty united
Eindhoven is a city of contrasts and artists highlight these differences this year. The city is split into 2 sections, the sprawl of concrete in the urban centers and the natural beauty of Eindhovens green spaces. The walking route begins and ends at the Eindhoven train station and an easy to follow map shows the advised route, this will make sure you don't miss anything. The Glow Cafe, right outside the Train Station is the perfect place to meet friends for a drink before you set out on your adventure.

Eindhoven-Life recommends:
Eindhoven University of Technology Campus:
Philips takes control of the campus in this major installation. Titled 'Beauty of stagnation', lighting designer Michel Suk fully illuminates several buildings within the campus. Patterns change or become visible highlighting both the architecture of the buildings and the natural spaces around them. The crowning achievement is the Kennispoort building where Michel Suk joins with composer Burt van Dongen to create an amazing spectacle of light linked perfectly to music.

City Hall:
Titled 'Light & Painting' the building is turned into a giant canvas. First the building is 'prepped', using light and sound to create the illusion; a giant canvas appears. Light then paints the building as an artist would an actual canvas. An artist even appears in silhouette to make small changes to his masterpiece. When finished, it begins again.

Bicycle Tunnel University:
Titled 'Tunnel of Love' this bicycle tunnel near the Dommel is changed into a fantasy world of bright pink hearts perfect for strolling hand in hand with someone special. Iridescent hearts completely engulf you in this otherwise pitch dark tunnel creating a truly interactive visual experience.

GLOW is always a literal 'highlight' of the year and we're pretty sure you won't be disappointed. Also check out the GLOW-listing in our event calendar for more details.
